Salisbury Fencing Club

Club News

3rd August 2024 We were very pleased to support the Salisbury Hospice at their Salisbury Summer Fair this year. Held in the wonderful surroundings of the Wilton House estate, a wide range of exhibitors and attractions ensured that the thousands of visitors were well entertained throughout the day. Members of the club were on-hand on our stall in the community area to show and explain all about our great sport which culminated in a display of all three weapons in action in the Community Arena at the end of the afternoon.

20th March 2024 The club ran a dedicated Sabre Night and provided an introduction to this weapon for novices and established fencers alike. Thanks to all who came along and enjoyed the experience. We may have one or two converts as a result! The positive response has also generated interest in a similarly-structured Epée Night next term - keep an eye on this site for more details in due course.

6th December 2023 There will now be a bonus extra session at the end of this term. Whereas the last date was due to be on the 13th of December there will also be an additional club night on the 20th of December which will be in keeping with our traditional last-night-of-the-year sessions. There will be food and drink and fun and games and laughter aplenty to see us through the winter break.

12th October 2023 The club will be exhibiting at the Health and Wellbeing event at Salisbury Guildhall on Sunday the 29th of October. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone curious about fencing to come along and find out about what our sport has to offer. There will also be a demonstration in the Guildhall Square, weather permitting. Update: The event was a success although the weather meant that the demonstration took place indoors in the Guildhall foyer instead. See the posts on our instagram for footage of the event.

20th September 2023 The roof of the sports hall is leaking again and this time to the extent that it is dangerous. Fencing tonight has been cancelled as a result. Hopefully we will be back next week.

8th July 2023 The club fielded 2 teams in the Rob Bruniges Cup event held by Bath Swords at the King Edward school in Bath. It was a great fun day of friendly competitive fencing enjoyed by all. We look forward to future runnings of this event.

22nd December 2021 A free session for beginners in years 5 and 6 will be held in our Sarum Academy venue on the 16th of January 2022 at 10am. All equipment and tuition will be provided. Booking is essential, so please book in advance by email to salisburyfencingclub@outlook.com. See the poster for full details.

24th June 2021 The club is very pleased to announce that sessions will resume from the 1st of September at our new venue which is the Sports Centre at Sarum Academy (one of our previous hosts). More details will follow soon.

1st September 2020 Regrettably, the prevalence of Covid-19 in the wider community has not yet abated to the level where the club can safely meet. The situation is under constant review and sessions will resume again once circumstances permit. Please ensure you are signed up to the mailing list in order not to miss out once sessions restart again.

16th March 2020 The club sessions have been suspended until further notice to help prevent further spread of Covid-19.

15th June 2019 The new Club Constitution which was approved at the AGM is now available online as a PDF.

1st May 2019 Today sees the start of the inaugural Geoffrey Russell Cup, a competition which runs throughout the summer term to find the club champion for this season. Arrange a fight with another club member (all electric, presided and timed) and record the results in the match log. The top four points scorers by the final club session will fence off for the title. Good luck!

11th Sep 2017 After much discussion we have decided to combine our Tuesday and Wednesday evening sessions into one. From now on we will be meeting one day a week on a Wednesday for an extended session. The format will be:

  • 6.30pm to 7.30pm Beginners and juniors. Group based warm up, foot work and lessons with free fencing towards the end of the session.
  • 7.30pm to 9.30pm Senior improvers, intermediate and advanced fencers. General fencing with individual lessons as required.

16th Mar 2017 Southern Region have changed the venue for the Regional Age Group Epee and Sabre competition at short notice. It will now be held at PlayFootball, Unit 29 Bramble Rd, Kembrey Park, Swindon SN2 8HB. See the Southern Region site for all the details.

1st Dec 2016 Christmas is fast approaching and on the last scheduled Club Night of the year - Wednesday the 14th - there will be a celebratory buffet for fencers and guests. Fencing will proceed as usual up to 8pm at which point arms will be dropped and the buffet will start. There is a green sign-up sheet in the Sea Cadets Centre - please put your name against the items you would like to bring to the buffet.
